The female reproductive system is a very complicated and delicate unit. One of the things to look out for is ovarian cysts. They are sacs with fluid on the surface of an ovary. Many will have these cysts at some point during their child-bearing years. These may not be harmful but in some cases can prove to be a sign of polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS. Ovarian cyst PCOS is a hormonal imbalance that can not only impact menstrual cycles and fertility, but can also lead to major health problems.
Androgens (male sex hormones) are actually produced normally in small amounts in the ovaries. But when too much is produced, the hormones become imbalanced. Signs of this could include hair growth on the face and body, missed periods, trouble getting pregnant, depression and weight gain. Other more serious health complications also exist. The body may have trouble properly using insulin. Produced in the pancreas, insulin is necessary to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. With sugar levels too high in the blood, women run the risk of developing diabetes. High blood pressure, heart disease and uterine cancer can all result from PCOS. A correct diagnosis is very important to ensure proper treatment. If you show any of the signs, see a doctor right away. Your physician will want to check insulin and other hormone levels as well as blood sugar levels. Cysts may be identified via a pelvic ultrasound. The best treatments for PCOS are diet, weight control and exercise on a regular basis. Foods with lots of saturated fat should be avoided as should sugary food. Maintain consistency with your carbohydrate intake. This does not mean to stop eating them; it only means that you should consume the same amount at each meal. This will keep a check on your blood sugar level. Exercise is a key component too. Choose an activity that is moderate to high in intensity and do it 30 minutes 3-4 days a week. When selecting an exercise, go with something that you enjoy so you are more inclined to stick with it. Or do different things each day to add variety. Walking is very beneficial and is a good choice for pretty much anybody. If you smoke, quit. PCOS is not definitely the cause of ovarian cysts. Some cysts are not harmful at all and others could be the sign of something else altogether. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is hereditary. It can be passed to a daughter from her mother or she can get it from her fathers side of her family. There is no way to prevent PCOS but getting treatment started early may help prevent future problems later in life. Information about Author: Over time all women should be check in case of cancer or even ovarian cyst pcos. This can be a serious problem for all women, which means if you have it.
